History of Tennis

hey there again,

It all began in 12th century France, where a rubber ball was struck with the palm of ones hand. The king in France at the time, king Louis X, enjoyed the sport but he hated playing it exposed to the elements so he had indoor courts built all around Paris!

It took until the 16th century for rackets to become a key part of the sport. The game was called ‘Tennis’ which was taken from the french word ‘Tenz’ which means to recieve. At this time, Tennis was mainly popular in England and France. One its biggest fans was the king of England at the time, Henry VII.

Many more raquet sports began to be invented all over the world, such as Badminton, table-tennis and squash.

Here 5 five facts about firsts time events in Tennis:

  1. The first Club was established in 1872 in Leamington Spa
  2. The first tournament took place in Wimbeldon, England in 1877 and is now one of the 4 major grand slams on the tennis circuit.
  3. The first tennis court in the U.S. was laid in 1874
  4. In 1926 the first  Professional tennis tour was established
  5. The US open was first held in 1881, it was a mens only tournament but a womens tournament was set up soon after in 1887

What is Tennis?

So Tennis …… What is it? This is a brief basic description of the sport. Further more detailed posts about the sport will follow this!

Tennis is a sport played with a racket and a rubber ball which is hollow and covered in fabric. It is normally played between two opposing players or two teams, which would be made up of two players on each side. The players stand at opposite ends of the court, which is divided by a net across it. The aim of the game is to hit the ball into your opponent’s side of the court in such a way as it cannot be returned or forces them to make a mistake returning it.

The sport requires good hand eye co-ordination and a mix of strength, control and agility.
